Robin
Hood Cap Directions
We recommend making a
newspaper template to ensure your hat is the right size. You will need a
sheet of paper and felt approximately 22” x 12”.
-
Draw the pattern as
shown here onto
folded paper, placing the 7” measurement on the fold.
-
Cut the pattern out.
-
Pin along two of the
open sides as shown
here then turn inside out.
-
Fold the curved edges up
along the dotted line to create two flaps.
- Try your pattern on.
-
If it is too small, draw
out the pattern a little large and repeat the process; if it is too
big, then cut it down, re-pin and try on again.
-
Once you have the
correct patter, pin it to a piece of felt and cut the pattern from
felt.
-
Fold the felt in half
placing the 7" side of the pattern on the fold.
- Trace
the pattern adding ½”
along all edges, except the fold.
-
Stitch the two sides together (just like they were pinned before).
-
Turn the hat inside out,
and turn up edges.
-
Tack or pin on a feather
to finish off your hat as shown
here.

Coif
Directions
A coif may be
constructed from linen, wool, cotton, or silk. All classes of people,
male and female, wear coifs. They may be worn alone or under hats,
helmets, chainmail, or even as a nightcap. To make the pattern you will
want to draw the coif onto a large piece of paper or newspaper. Here is
how to get your basic pattern:
-
Fold the pattern paper
in half with the fold at the top.
-
Measure the top of the
head from mid-ear to mid-ear and divide that number in half, this is
measurement A which will run the length of the left side of the
paper.
-
Measure around the back
of the head from temple to temple and divide that number in half,
this is measurement B, which will go from the bottom of measurement
A horizontally across the page.
-
Measurement A and measurement B meet at point D.
-
Take measurement A and
add 1.5”, this is measurement C use this measurement as the radius
to draw the curve for the back of the coif. See
diagram for drawing
of pattern.
-
From point D drop 1”
down for point E.
-
From point E draw a line
to the end of measurement B, which will be called point F as shown
is this diagram.
-
To this drawing you will
need to add a
5/8” seam allowance on all edges EXCEPT the one along the fold.
-
Cut the pattern out and
try on to see if it fits, make any adjustments that are necessary.
- Now
you are ready to
cut out your pattern on your chosen material. Fold the fabric
in half, right sides together.
-
Place the top of the
pattern even with the fold of the material as seen
here and cut out the
pattern.
-
From the remaining fabric cut two
rectangles 14” long and 2” wide for the coif’s ties (tie length may
be altered or you may use ribbon or cord).
-
With the fabric right
sides together, sew the coif’s back seam, clip the curved portion of
the seam, and then press it open as shown
here.
-
With the front edge
wrong side up, turn the edge over ¼” and press, turn the edge over
¼” a second time, press, then stitch the edge. Repeat this process
for the bottom edge as shown
here.
-
Fold the tie in half the
long way, right sides together. Starting at one end, stitch ½” from
the fold the length of the tie. Stop ½” from the end of the tie,
turn and stitch across this end to close this end of the tie. Trim
the excess material off, close to the seam. Turn the tie inside out
and then press. Do this for each tie.
-
Turn the open end of the
tie underneath, place the folded portion of the tie on the wrong
side of the fabric, stitch through the folded portion of the tie to
hold it into place as shown
here.
-
The finished coif will
look something like this.
