T-Tunic
Directions
-
To determine the total yardage
needed, measure from shoulder to however long you want the tunic.
Double that measurement and add three inches because you will need
to calculate for the front and back of the tunic.
-
Fold the fabric in quarters as shown
here.
-
Use a well fitting shirt as your pattern, place it on
the material as shown
here.
-
You will want to cut around the shirt giving yourself plenty of room
for seam. allowances. Note how the sleeves are cut with LOTS of
clearance at the armpits and extra wide sleeves so they are long and
flowing. You may have shorter sleeves but they should still be
rather wide. The normal length of the t-tunic is ankle length for
the women and knee length for the men.
-
Make a neck hole large enough for your neck, usually about 6”-7” –
you may want to measure your neck.
-
Now make a small slit on the front edge of the hole so the hole will
fit over your head.
-
The finished pattern should look like
this.
-
Turn the pattern inside out, and sew up the side seams. Turn your
tunic right side out.
-
Turn under and hem all raw edges.
-
Your finished garb will look something like
this.
Your tunic is very versatile; you can
have a very plain one with no trim like the one a peasant would wear or
like the wealthier people with bright trim. If you want to make your
tunic decorative, you may add trim to the bottom, cuffs, and around the
collar. Remember the color of the material should be earth toned but
the trim may be bright colors.
Men should wear their T-tunic with dark
pants or tights, a heavy leather belt or drapery cord, a pouch or
drawstring bag to hang from your belt, and sandals, slippers or
moccasins. You may also want to add a simple cape or cloak.
Women should wear their T-tunic with a
heavy leather belt or drapery cord, a pouch or drawstring bag to hang
from your belt, a kerchief or veil, and sandals, slippers or moccasins. |
